July Meeting Minutes

Here's a quick summary of our July meeting from a week ago.

We first discussed sponsoring the Full Moon 5k, which is in Madison next Thursday, July 29th. The membership there approved a motion for WTC to sponsor the event. Information on the race is here: http://www.movinshoesmadison.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=49&Itemid=17

The Capitol Mile was the next topic for discussion. We talked about the necessity for volunteers (and still need some, so please email Lindsey if you can help! lcarlson2@wisc.edu), and talked about other preparations such as door prizes, etc. We also passed a motion to include prize money for the top male and female finishes in the open race. 1st place receives $100, second $50 and third place $25.

Our next item was women's coaching. As I will be unable to continuing coaching in the fall due to scheduling conflicts, Dallas White has stepped up and is the next women's distance coach!

After that we discussed the cross country schedule for the fall. Here is what we decided on:

9/11 - Midwest Open @ Parkside
9/18 - Concordia Invite
9/25 - Roy Griak Invite OR Beloit Olde English Classic
10/2 - Loyola Lakefront Invitational
10/9 - Platteville Pioneer Open OR Ripon Invite
10/16 - Drews-Neubauer Invite (LAX)
10/23 - NIRCA Midwest Regional @ UM-Twin Cities
11/13 - NIRCA Nationals @ Bloomington, IN

And finally, Jim gave us a summary of the Summer Track Series events which were held throughout June and July. Overall the meets were successful, and we are thankful to all of our volunteers!

WTC December Elections Meeting Recap

Posted by: Jade Schmitt
6:38pm, Friday, January 1, 2010

We began our meeting with the officer elections and the distribution of appointed positions. The results were as follows:

Elected
President: Jeremy Berg
Vice-President: Jade Schmitt
Secretary: Laura Platner
Treasurer: Kyle Hall

Appointed
Webmaster: Ben Carr
Social Events Coordinator: Lindsey Carlson
Meet Coordinators: spring- Sam Keepman & fall- Sam/Ben Garbe
Membership Coordinators: Ben Hoegh and Nicole Kornder
Moosletter Editors: Evan Mast and [tentatively] Brian Phelps
Apparel Coordinators: Taylor Heinselman & Karin Rasmussen

We next discussed the need for a more trimmed down Board of Directors in order to more easily facilitate discussions on important club issues. We decided that the Board of Directors shall consist of: the President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Meet Coordinators, Social Events Coordinator, Webmaster, Evan Mast, and Bryan Barker.

WTC discussed the possibility of hosting either the NIRCA Regionals or Nationals meet next fall. It was agreed that Nationals would be preferable, and our decision hasn't been made yet- it is dependent upon whether or not we may be able to use the Thomas Zimmer Cross Country Course in lieu of Pope Farm Park. Discussion on this is still on hold, but will become an important topic in the coming months as application deadlines approach! Our race directors for the race we eventually choose are Kyle Hall and Bryan Barker.

Spring advertising was another topic for discussion. Our goal is to recruit more sprinters and field athletes (as well as distance runners) for the spring season. We agreed that fliers should be created and distributed; and we will have a booth at the Spring Student Org Fair which is to be held on January 27 from 5-8pm at the Memorial Union. I believe we had a few volunteers step forward to help man this event (Bryan & Lindsey?) but we may need a couple more so watch your inbox!

A lively debate then ensued regarding practice times for this coming semester. Our poll results indicated that 5:30pm and 5:45pm were roughly the most convenient start times for practice. Our goal is to have all teams (men's & women's distance, sprints, throws, etc.) meet together at a particular time so that we can integrate a little more and get to know people who we don't normally train with. We decided that everyone will meet together at 5:30pm on Mondays and Wednesdays.

That debate was followed by a decidedly fiery discussion on the subject of new singlets. There was a great deal of mess that ensued when it was revealed that only one design had been submitted, even with the lengthy deadline (followed by a chorus of "I have one I'm working on!"). The issue at hand is that we would like to have a new design chosen and printed by the start of track season as we have virtually no singlets remaining, and several of our current members haven't gotten one yet.

As such, several deadlines were assigned and the Board of Directors will be making some decisions on designs, which will then be disseminated via our two Yahoo groups for the WTC membership to look over. This decision is also pending a response from Nike, who we have requested sponsorship from.

Our final topic was the 2010 Indoor Track Schedule, which is:
Jan 15 - Whitewater
Jan 23 - Badger Track Classic (@ the Shell)
Jan 30 - Carthage (Tadd Metzger Invite)
Feb 5 - Pointer Invite (Stevens Point)
Feb 13 - Meet @ Illinois vs. other NIRCA teams; or Platteville
Feb 19 - Red & White Open (@ the Shell)
Mar 5/6 - Whitewater OR Stevens Point Last chance meets.
